Founder : Jean de Dieu MUKUNZI, MPH, CCHW, PMP
The idea of founding Ebenezer Healthcare Access emerged in June 2009 following Jean’s eligibility to Medicaid. At that time, he was not able to use it because of language and cultural barriers. As Jean gained communication skills and abilities in American English, he thought of going back to school. His choice was Wright State University. In his application process, the admissions office requested him to elaborate a letter of intent demonstrating his interest in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program. At this time, Mr. Mukunzi stated that MPH would empower him with skills and competencies that are highly needed in helping immigrants to navigate the US healthcare system.
The passion for helping immigrants and other underserved populations remained grew as Jean sailed through his graduate program. As a requirement to graduate with a Master’s in Public Health, he conducted research to assess refugees’ health needs in Montgomery County. This research has since been one of the first studies on immigrants living in the Greater Dayton area. Different academic researchers and community surveyors have cited this research to make viable healthcare recommendations to support immigrants.
More than seven years after graduation, Mr. Mukunzi has served populations in several counties of Ohio while working for CareSource to help immigrants and other members navigate the US healthcare system. Currently, he works with Dayton and Montgomery County Public Health in the implementation of the Fatherhood Program as the agency seeks to curtail the infant mortality rate.
